
Dr. Michael Ralph
Chair and Professor of the Department of Afro-American Studies
Dr, Michael Ralph teaches, and is Chair and Professor of the Department of Afro-American Studies at Howard University. He also teaches at the New York University School of Medicine. He received a B.A. in Africana Studies from Morris Brown College, and later pursued an M.A. and Ph.D. in Anthropology from the University of Chicago. Dr. Ralph's research integrates political science, economics, history, and medical anthropology through an explicit focus on debt, slavery, insurance, forensics, and incarceration. He has received fellowships such as the W. E. B. Du Bois Research Institute Fellowship from Harvard University, the Charles Warren Center Fellowship from Harvard University (Multimedia History & Lit.) and ACLS Charles A. Ryskamp Research Fellowship. Currently, Dr. Ralph is at work on two books that center on slavery, insurance, and incarceration.
